MYP IDU Exhibition at elaGreen School: Where Mathematics Meets Visual Arts

At elaGreen School, a leading IB School in Chennai, education is designed to go beyond textbooks and traditional subject boundaries. Learning here is interdisciplinary, inquiry-driven, and deeply connected to real-world application.

Our recent MYP Interdisciplinary Unit (IDU) Exhibition was a powerful example of this philosophy in action. The exhibition showcased how our MYP 1 students creatively integrated Visual Arts and Mathematics, demonstrating that when disciplines collaborate, learning becomes deeper, more meaningful, and more engaging.

This was not merely an art display. It was a celebration of structured creativity, conceptual understanding, and confident student voice.

Understanding the Power of Interdisciplinary Learning in the IB Framework

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) emphasizes conceptual understanding and interdisciplinary connections. The IDU (Interdisciplinary Unit) is designed to help students explore how different subject areas intersect and complement each other.

In this exhibition, students explored the relationship between:

Mathematical precision

Artistic imagination

Spatial reasoning

Creative composition

Rather than treating Mathematics and Visual Arts as separate subjects, students investigated how mathematical thinking strengthens artistic expression.

They examined questions such as:

ü How do lines and angles create movement in art?

ü How does geometry influence design?

ü How does perspective create depth?

ü How does proportion bring balance to a composition?

Through inquiry, experimentation, and reflection, students discovered that mathematics is not confined to numbers — it is a powerful structural tool in visual storytelling.

This approach reflects the IB philosophy: students do not simply memorize content — they apply knowledge meaningfully.

From Concept to Creation – Mathematics in Visual Expression

The exhibition featured artworks that clearly demonstrated mathematical concepts such as:

Lines and Angles

Students used varying angles to create direction, motion, and emotional impact. Acute angles introduced tension and movement, while horizontal and vertical lines created stability and calm.

Shapes and Geometry

Geometric forms formed the foundation of many artworks. Students explored symmetry, tessellation, and geometric balance to design visually compelling pieces.

Area and Space

Understanding area helped students distribute elements effectively across the canvas. They applied measurement and proportion to avoid overcrowding or imbalance.

Perspective and Depth

By using vanishing points and spatial alignment, students created realistic depth and three-dimensional illusion in two-dimensional artwork.

Mathematical thinking added:

Ø Structural clarity

Ø Visual harmony

Ø Balanced composition

Ø Measured creativity

The result was artwork that was both imaginative and technically refined.

At elaGreen School, this integration reinforces that creativity thrives when supported by logical structure.

Experiential Learning – Students as Educators

What truly distinguished this MYP IDU Exhibition was its experiential dimension.

Students did not simply display their projects — they actively engaged the audience.

Live Demonstrations

Students confidently explained:

Ø How mathematical measurements shaped their designs

Ø Why perspective was crucial in creating realism

Ø How angles influenced movement and structure

Ø These demonstrations reflected strong conceptual clarity and deep understanding.

Interactive Games and Activities

Parents participated in hands-on activities designed by students, including:

Ø Angle identification challenges

Ø Perspective drawing exercises

Ø Shape composition games

Ø Spatial arrangement activities

This interactive format transformed the exhibition from a passive viewing experience into an engaging learning journey.

Even as many parents were occupied with the Parent-Teacher Meeting (PTM), the energy and enthusiasm of participating students created an atmosphere of curiosity and excitement.

The exhibition demonstrated that learning at our IB School in Chennai is dynamic, collaborative, and student-driven.

Beyond Academics – Developing IB Learner Profile Attributes

The MYP IDU Exhibition was not only about academic integration. It also reflected the development of essential IB learner attributes.

Students demonstrated:

Thinkers

They applied critical reasoning to connect mathematical principles with artistic design.

Communicators

They articulated their learning confidently and clearly during demonstrations.

Inquirers

They explored multiple ways mathematics could influence artistic composition.

Reflective Learners

They evaluated how mathematical structure improved their creative output.

Risk-Takers

They stepped outside comfort zones to present and engage with parents.

This holistic development is central to the IB philosophy and to the educational vision of elaGreen School.

A Celebration of Meaningful Learning

As a progressive IB School in Chennai, elaGreen School believes that real learning happens when students make connections across disciplines.

The MYP IDU Exhibition beautifully demonstrated that:

Ø Mathematics enhances creativity

Ø Art strengthens conceptual understanding

Ø Collaboration deepens learning

Ø Confidence grows through presentation

For those who were engaged in the PTM and may have missed the exhibition, we are delighted to share these highlights. The work displayed by our MYP 1 students is a testament to the power of interdisciplinary education.

When structured logic meets creative imagination, students don’t just learn — they understand.

And when they understand, they create with purpose.

Discover Learning Beyond Boundaries at elaGreen School

At elaGreen School, we are committed to nurturing confident, curious, and conceptually strong learners through the IB framework.

The MYP IDU Exhibition stands as a proud example of how our students are empowered to think across disciplines and express their understanding meaningfully.

Learning here is not divided into boxes — it is connected, collaborative, and transformative.
